Research interests

I am a rheumatologist and researcher with a primary interest in psoriatic arthritis but also a strong research portfolio concerning the foot and ankle. My research covers two main areas: psoriatic arthritis and the foot and ankle, with a combination of clinical research and laboratory (biomechanical) science. My major research interest is in accurate phenotyping of psoriatic arthritis, and personalising treatment response according to phenotype. Outcome measure development and validation continue to be a strong element in my research portfolio.

I am co-founder and past President of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) and co-founder of the FASTER group at the University of Leeds

I have worked in this field for over 30 years and has contributed substantially to knowledge of the clinical manifestations of psoriatic arthritis, classification criteria, outcome measurement, and treatment strategies. I have been chief investigator on two major international collaborative studies and chief investigator for the first strategy trial in psoriatic arthritis. I have developed a number of outcome tools for use in rheumatology, notably the Psoriasis Epidemiology Screening Tool, the Leeds Dactylitis Instrument, the Leeds Enthesitis Instrument, the Psoriatic Arthritis Self Assessment tool, and the Psoriatic Arthritis Disease Activity Score.
